Canon or Nikon

What should I buy, Canon or Nikon?

I don’t know how many time I got the question. I will buy myself a DSLR camera, what shall I choose, Canon or Nikon?

The biggest problem is that there are not any straight answer. If you ask 100 professionals, it will be big chance that you get 50 votes for Canon and 50 votes for Nikon.

And that’s not so strange, as they have more or less same amount of market shares. And it’s by far the two most used DSLR camera, with almost 85 percent of the total market.

A digital single-lens reflex camera (also called a digital SLR or DSLR) is a digital camera that combines the optics and the mechanisms of a single-lens reflex camera with a digital imaging sensor, as opposed to photographic film.

Of the ten most sold digital cameras on Amazon 2017 was there only one camera that was not Canon or Nikon. Five Canon, four Nikon, and one from another brand, Fujifilm X-T2.

But first little short history from the two giants.

Both Canon and Nikon have their main office in Tokyo, Japan. Nikon was first, 25 of July 1917. Twenty years after Canon was founded, on the 10 of August 1937.

Nikon was also first out with DSLR cameras. Already 1991 Nikon together with Kodak came out with the market’s first digital camera Nasa F4. But it was first the second quarter of 1999 when Nikon’s first self-produced camera came D1 that it started. Canon came out with their first camera the fourth quarter of 2000

So what shall I choose, Canon or Nikon?

To make this more challenging for you. You need to be aware of, neither one is a bad choice, which means it will not be an easy choice.

First, you must decide if you will go for a crop or a full frame camera. The full frame is always more expensive and is more of a pro camera.

The term full frame is used by users of digital single-lens reflex cameras (DSLRs) as a shorthand for an image sensor format which is the same size as 35mm format (36 mm × 24 mm) film”
Here is a helpful article about the difference between crop and full frame.

The second and maybe the most important is what kind of photo you will shoot Speed Resolution? Video quality?

I use to say that you need to see on your budget. Then find the camera from Canon and Nikon in this price and compare this two. If not it would be close to impossible.

There is a difference between both. And even if the difference is small it will be substantial wish camera you should choose. e.g. You don’t want a camera with low shutter speed if you plan to take sports photo.

Here is some point you need to have in mind

Below I have listed a couple of points that you should have in mind when you choose if you are going for Canon or Nikon.

  • What is the most important with your new camera? Speed? Resolution? Or video quality?
  • What do the cameras offer at your current experience level and for your current budget?
  • What lenses are available, and you plan to add to your kit? And of course the prices of this?

A final word!

Both Canon and Nikon have excellent cameras and a reliable image quality. And it difficult to choose a winner between them. If one brand offered a better shutter speed or more pixels, then the other will soon show up something that’s better.
